Selenge, the Little Goose and her First Migration

The Central Asian Flyway (CAF) links breeding grounds in the Russian Arctic with wintering areas in South Asia and the Maldives, supporting millions of migratory birds each year. Birds rely on a connected chain of ecosystems that provide breeding, stopover, feeding, and wintering habitats along the route. The habitats listed below are illustrative examples of key landscapes and not an exhaustive list. Conserving this network of ecosystems is vital for sustaining migratory bird populations.

Ecosystem Services Provided by Migratory Birds
The Central Asian Flyway connects Arctic breeding grounds with wintering areas across South Asia and beyond. Migratory birds support ecosystems, biodiversity, and human livelihoods across this flyway. This poster highlights the role that migratory birds play in nutrient cycling, wetland food webs, pollination and seed dispersal, insect and pest control, as well as their cultural and economic value.
