About this project

Led by ACBK in partnership with RSPB and BirdLife International, this long-running project (since 2004) supports conservation of the Sociable Lapwing by improving understanding of breeding performance, migration routes, and wintering ecology. The work centres on monitoring nesting sites and habitat conditions in Kazakhstan, while also using satellite tracking and expert collaboration to strengthen the flyway-scale evidence base. The project engages specialists from outside Kazakhstan and involves student field assistants from local universities, contributing to skills development and stronger national capacity for monitoring and conservation. By combining structured field monitoring, tracking, and targeted outreach, the project supports better management responses and strengthens partnerships across the species’ range. ## Key facts - **Target species/group:** Sociable Lapwing - **Activity type:** Conservation - **Themes:** Satellite tagging; Ringing/Banding; Habitat monitoring; Landbirds; Education & outreach - **Implementing organization:** Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK) - **Timeline:** Since 2004 ## Key outcomes / expected outputs - Ongoing nest and habitat monitoring in Kazakhstan, supported by satellite tracking - Improved evidence base on breeding, migration and wintering ecology - Strengthened in-country capacity and flyway partnerships through university involvement and expert collaboration
