About this project

This joint ACBK–RSPB project strengthens protection of migratory raptors along the Central Asian Flyway by linking biodiversity conservation with safer and more reliable rural energy infrastructure. The project supports Kazakhstan’s engagement in flyway and raptor frameworks, while delivering practical, replicable action to reduce bird electrocution on powerlines. Core activities include targeted powerline surveys in and around protected areas, stakeholder coordination, and training on accessible tools for data collection and planning. The project promotes systematic identification of hazardous lines, development of retrofit concepts, and integration of findings into site management and policy discussions. By combining field evidence, capacity building, and institutional dialogue, the project aims to reduce accidental electrocutions (especially affecting Steppe Eagles and other raptors), strengthen conservation collaboration, and support more resilient energy networks in rural areas. ## Key facts - **Target species/group:** Raptors (incl. Steppe Eagle) - **Activity type:** Conservation; Capacity building; Outreach - **Themes:** Habitat monitoring; Raptors; Education & outreach - **Implementing organization:** ACBK; RSPB - **Timeline:** Aug 2023 – Feb 2024 - **Donor / Budget:** GBP 19,984; UK Aid / FCDO (UK Embassy) ## Key outcomes / expected outputs - Kazakhstan signed the Raptors MoU (Feb 2024) and advanced flyway-level cooperation, including support to the Central Asian Flyway Initiative - Powerline-related knowledge exchange and stakeholder engagement to support electrocution mitigation - Trainings and guidance on data collection tools (incl. Survey123), and development of user guidance materials - Costed project concepts for retrofitting dangerous powerlines and sensitivity mapping to inform priority action and site management - Initiated discussions with relevant authorities on improving legislation and implementation mechanisms
