About this project

This project studied the migration ecology of Eurasian Curlew and Whimbrel in the Ganges–Brahmaputra–Meghna Delta in Bangladesh (2021–2023). It aimed to identify migratory routes, breeding areas, habitat-use patterns, and key stopover sites, with attention to how these species use the delta during the non-breeding period. Field activities included population monitoring and behavioural observations, alongside tracking approaches to understand movements and habitat preferences. The findings contribute to a clearer evidence base on migration ecology and inform conservation considerations for these shorebirds within the Central Asian Flyway context. ## Key facts - **Target species/group:** Shorebirds (Eurasian Curlew; Whimbrel) - **Activity type:** Conservation; Research - **Themes:** Satellite tagging; Ringing/Banding; Shorebirds - **Implementing organization:** Department of Zoology, Jagannath University - **Timeline:** September 2021 – December 2023 ## Key outcomes / expected outputs - Improved understanding of routes, habitat use, and stopover patterns - Identification of conservation-relevant sites and habitat needs in the delta - Evidence to support flyway-scale conservation discussions
