Identifying Threats to Waterbirds and Taking Action with Fishers at Tanguar Haor (Bangladesh)

Project overview

Since 2023, this project has focused on identifying threats to waterbirds at Tanguar Haor, a Ramsar site in Bangladesh, and eliminating illegal fishing gear from areas used by waterbirds for foraging and roosting, with support from local government authorities. The project also engages local fishers to raise awareness about sustainable fishing practices and the importance of protecting critical waterbird habitats. By combining direct conservation actions with outreach and education, the project aims to promote coexistence between local livelihoods and waterbird conservation and ensure the long-term protection of this important wetland.

Key outcomes / expected outputs

Reduced fishing-related risks to waterbirds through removal of illegal gear and increased fisher awareness, promoting coexistence between local livelihoods and conservation at Tanguar Haor.
