About this project

Since 2023, this project has focused on identifying threats to waterbirds at Tanguar Haor, a Ramsar site in Bangladesh, and taking practical steps to reduce risks in key foraging and roosting areas. With support from local authorities, the initiative has removed illegal fishing gear from sensitive wetland zones and worked directly with local fishers to raise awareness about sustainable fishing practices and the importance of protecting waterbird habitats. By combining on-the-ground conservation action with outreach and education, the project promotes coexistence between local livelihoods and conservation while supporting the long-term protection of this internationally important wetland. ## Key facts - **Target species/group:** Waterbirds - **Activity type:** Conservation; Citizen science; Outreach - **Themes:** Waterbirds; Education & outreach - **Implementing organization:** Department of Zoology, Jagannath University - **Timeline:** December 2023 – Present ## Key outcomes / expected outputs - Reduced fishing-related risks to waterbirds through removal of illegal gear - Increased awareness among fishers on sustainable practices and habitat protection - Improved conditions for waterbird foraging and roosting in priority areas - Stronger collaboration with local authorities and communities
