About this species

The Grey Plover (Pluvialis squatarola) is the largest of the Pluvialis plovers, with a silver-grey back, white underside, and diagnostic black axillaries visible in flight. In breeding plumage, the face, breast and belly become jet black. It breeds on dry Arctic tundra across Siberia and North America and winters on mudflats, sandy coasts and estuaries virtually worldwide. In the CAF region, wintering and passage birds are recorded along the coasts of the Indian subcontinent, the Arabian Peninsula and East Africa. Although globally classified as Least Concern, some flyway populations are declining due to coastal habitat loss and disturbance.
