About this project

This project investigates migration and demography of Arctic shorebirds in the Chaun Delta area of Western Chukotka (Russia), based at the Chaun Biological Field Station on Ayopechan Island. In 2025, large-scale capture efforts were resumed during both breeding and post-breeding periods. Captured shorebirds are ringed/banded, and individuals of suitable body mass are fitted with GPS-GSM trackers to generate movement data and improve understanding of migration routes and key areas used across the annual cycle. The project contributes valuable field-based evidence from a remote Arctic region and supports broader flyway research for shorebird conservation. ## Key facts - **Target species/group:** Shorebirds - **Activity type:** Research - **Themes:** Satellite tagging; Ringing/Banding - **Implementing organization:** Institute of Biological Problems of the North, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IBPN FEB RAS), Magadan ## Key outcomes / expected outputs - Deployed 4 GPS-GSM trackers on juvenile male Ruffs; first migration-route data already received from at least one tracker - Ringed/banded additional shorebird species (incl. Dunlin, Pectoral Sandpiper, Red-necked Phalarope, Common Snipe, Common Ringed Plover)
