Research & Monitoring

About this project

This 2005 tracking project tagged two Bar-headed Geese (Anser indicus) in Nepal’s Chitwan National Park (Narayani River) to document migration routes between wintering and breeding areas. Birds were captured using leg nooses and fitted with satellite transmitters. The tracking followed their migration across major geographic barriers, providing early evidence on long-distance movements and key seasonal locations. The work involved collaboration between the BBC Natural History Unit, USGS, and partners, and contributed to scientific understanding of Bar-headed Goose migration ecology in South and Central Asia. ## Key facts - **Target species/group:** Bar-headed Goose - **Activity type:** Research - **Themes:** Satellite tagging - **Implementing organization:** BBC Natural History Unit; USGS; Rajendra Suwal (partner) - **Timeline:** Feb 2005 – Nov 2005 - **Donor / Budget:** BBC; USBS (amount not specified) ## Key outcomes / expected outputs - Tracked movements to breeding areas in Tibet/China and wintering locations in India (Bihar and Uttar Pradesh) - Documented return movements and route information relevant for migration ecology
