About this project

This project strengthens understanding of terrestrial bird migration into Gujarat (India), focusing on forest and grassland migrants that are less studied than waterbirds. Implemented by the Sustainable Ecology Foundation (SEF) and SHEDO, the project introduces a site-based, colour-coded ringing system across six protected locations. Each site uses a distinct ring colour, enabling observers to identify the origin of a bird in the field and improve tracking of movement patterns across landscapes. The project aims to build a robust dataset on seasonal presence, habitat use, and key stopover or wintering areas for groups such as flycatchers, warblers, thrushes, larks, and pipits. Findings are intended to guide habitat protection and provide a replicable migration-monitoring model. ## Key facts - **Target species/group:** Mainly forest and grassland birds (terrestrial migrants) - **Activity type:** Conservation; Research - **Themes:** Ringing/Banding; Habitat monitoring - **Implementing organization:** Sustainable Ecology Foundation (SEF) and SHEDO - **Timeline:** 2023–2028 ## Key outcomes / expected outputs - First comprehensive migration dataset for forest and grassland birds entering Gujarat - Creation of a database linking movement to specific habitats and identifying critical areas - Scalable colour-coded ringing model that can be replicated elsewhere
