WG 4 — Ringing & Tagging

The Ringing and Tagging Working Group strengthens regional capacity to study bird migration by coordinating bird marking, telemetry, and data-sharing efforts across the Central Asian Flyway.

Understanding migratory routes, stopover sites, survival rates, and threats is essential for effective conservation. Yet the CAF remains one of the least coordinated regions for bird marking and tracking.

• Build regional technical capacity in bird ringing and tagging

• Establish and strengthen ringing stations at key sites

• Standardize protocols across countries

• Create a shared CAF ringing and tagging data platform

• Training and mentoring of ringers and researchers

• Supporting colour marking, telemetry, and resighting networks

• Addressing legal and administrative barriers to bird marking

• Facilitating transboundary research collaborations

A coordinated, flyway-wide migration research network that informs conservation action and policy across borders.
