About this project

The Environment Society of Oman (ESO) runs a long-term Raptors Research and Conservation Programme (launched in 2012) to improve knowledge and protection of raptors in Oman. The programme focuses on priority species such as Egyptian Vulture, Lappet-faced Vulture, and Steppe Eagle, combining field research on population status, nesting, breeding success, and behaviour with practical conservation action. A key element is the use of ringing/banding and satellite tracking (including tracking of juvenile vultures) to understand movements and identify risks and priority areas for conservation. In parallel, ESO carries out public outreach and produces educational materials to raise awareness about the ecological role of raptors and promote conservation-friendly behaviour. The programme supports evidence-based decision-making and helps fill long-standing knowledge gaps on raptors in Oman. ## Key facts - **Target species/group:** Egyptian Vulture; Lappet-faced Vulture; Steppe Eagle - **Activity type:** Conservation; Research; Capacity building; Outreach - **Themes:** Satellite tagging; Ringing/Banding; Habitat monitoring; Raptors; Education & outreach - **Implementing organization:** Environment Society of Oman (ESO) - **Timeline:** 2012–2025 - **Donor / Budget:** USD 195,000; Hima Fund; Shell Oman; Disney Conservation Fund; Renaissance Oman SAOG; Violet Astor Donations; Conservation Science Global; OSME; be’ah ## Key outcomes / expected outputs - Long-term monitoring and research data on priority raptors - Satellite tracking and ringing/banding to inform conservation priorities - Outreach products and awareness-raising activities (incl. publications/materials)
